Uncover Connections, Expand Perspectives: Embrace Interdisciplinary Studies!

Coker’s interdisciplinary studies program helps students mix their passions and talents to create customized fields of study. Majoring in a subject typically involves the intense study of a single discipline – but interdisciplinary studies majors work across disciplines, seeing how things connect and bringing them together.

All classes reach across multiple disciplines (sociology, psychology, business, history, the sciences, the arts) to discover how complex our world is. From those perspectives, we talk about approaches to solve problems that are important to all of us.

Interdisciplinary studies majors learn specific skills, including identifying ideas and challenges, communicating, analyzing written and visual texts (including graphs and films), and discover our own strengths and passions.

Real-world Experience

Classes are a mix of lectures, conversations, and hands-on projects.

Writing projects can be short essays, reflections, and blog pages. All assignments are process-oriented; there are no timed exams.

Most classes have an experiential component, such as an internship or a travel/observation experience. You are applying and experiencing the concepts you learn about in class.

Tailored for you

The IS major is individualized and flexible, allowing students to combine coursework that is most relevant and leading to an efficient graduation plan.

With a small number of students in the major, you have easy access to your advisor, who is closely engaged and highly invested in your success and graduation goals.
